A beautiful documentary about the worldview, art and music of the Shona people through the Mbira, an ancient musical instrument from Zimbabwe.
This video production (with English subtitles) was made by mbira maker and friend, Rodrigo Laje, along with Lapacho Producciones.
They extend their gratitude to the Mbira Magic community for raising half of the production costs, and also to family and friends for further support.
“Kunakirwa” - To Enjoy
The first time I watched this film was during a week-long mbira camp that I was leading. One of the students, a Zimbabwean lady who had spent most of her adult life in the UK, had come with the wish to reconnect to her ancestors. The film returned her to the same remote paths she used to walk on her way to school - evoking deep memories, stirring tears of awe, and bringing her one step closer to her goal. She found the connection she was searching for the next day, playing nhemamusasa under a tree.
