Introducing... Andy Fowler

Hey folks. I'm Andy!

I set up Mbira Magic in September 2015 to provide a platform for my mbira books, and to inspire and support mbira enthusiasts around the world to create and share their own great mbira products/resources. Visitors enjoy our series of special Nzira Ye Mbira (Path of Mbira) features, on, and by leading mbira figures, regular competitions and a variety of opportunities to Get Involved with our development. We also raise funds to support music and arts projects in Zimbabwe and elsewhere.

Details about me, my art and other work are at the bottom of this post.

What the site becomes really is down to the community, and to help it be its best, I'd like to encourage you to ask questions, make suggestions and think about contributing your own content. This could be a book of the songs you know, a piece of writing about anything mbira related, your own art, or something else totally off-the-wall. However wild your ideas are (what are you thinking about right now?), get in touch. I can help with design, formatting, promotion and distribution.

My first book Unlocking Mbira takes enthusiasts through a series of exercises and song examples designed to enhance their understanding of the instrument and its music. Warning: this book will transform your mbira playing! A follow up book is on its way, along with a book of traditional songs from Fungai Gahadzikwa, both due for release before March 2016. Could yours be next? Look out for announcements in our newsletter. Sign up to it Here and you will also benefit from access to hidden pages containing our growing selection of FREE resources.

My background is quite varied. I definitely favour activities that require dexterity and skill, and most of what I do falls within the areas of creativity, communication and education. The Mbira Magic adventure ticks all these boxes for me!

Here's a few of the things I get up to, or have done in the past, followed by a couple of my paintings. Visit my Art Website if you're interested in seeing more.

I hope you like what I do. Remember that I'm keen to support your creativity too, so have a think about my earlier question and maybe we can work together on something the mbira community will love!
